He started the first set just like in his previous two matches at the Australian Open against Przysiezny and Popyrin – easily winning it 6-3. Tomas Etcheverry was unable to threaten Djokovic, who capitalized on his second break point to take a 4-2 lead and then comfortably served his way to a 1-0 advantage. The fans showed their support as Djokovic took the first set off Etcheverry 6-3.
