A few steps further, in a similar position, is a skinny calf. It is trying to get up, but after several unsuccessful attempts, it lowers its head and horns, and lies down again.
“I’m afraid it’s going to die. They’ve lost their strength, they just lie there,” says Milenko Plavsic, a farmer from Kovilj, a small town near Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia, with a sad voice.
These are just some of the 200 animals, mostly cows, cattle, and semi-wild horses, that are at the transition between the old and the new year.
