Spectacular warming up for the April Candidates Tournament “Chess Wimbledon” once again lived up to its reputation, despite the absence of the world’s top-rated player. Magnus Carlsen, who remained unbeaten, relinquished his title of world champion and waived participation in the Wijk aan Zee tournament. His absence, however, did not detract from the dramatic tournament, which witnessed a highly competitive final round culminating in a quadruple tie for first place and a rapid play-off. At the end of a series of incredible turnarounds, the winner emerged.
